West Winds was formed with the support of the People’s Association & the Bukit Batok Community Club in 1993 for amateur musicians, who would like to continue pursuing their interest in band music after graduating from their educational institutions. Its members come from all walks of life and they include full-time national servicemen, young executives, engineers, managers as well as students. They come from all over Singapore, some as far as Hougang, Tampines and Pasir Ris. Members’ age ranges from about 16 – 31, all bonded together by the common love for music. Currently, the Band has a strength of about 60 members.
The Band practices on every Saturday evening and will increase practice on Sunday afternoon whenever there is any major project coming. Members often have to make sacrifices on weekends for practices.
It is one of West Winds’ objective to promote culture awareness by bringing wind music to wherever the Band performs. Over the years, it has become a place where music lovers gather and many good acquaintances were made.
